Albany County

 

        On this 20th day of November A.D. 1832 personally appeared before me Joseph B. Moore a Judge of the County Courts of the County of Albany in the State aforesaid Jacob Suter a resident of the Town of Berne in the County of Albany and State of New York aged 79 year and upwards who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832.

        That he entered the service of the United States in the following named officers and served as herein stated.

        H first entered the said service in the Town of Bethlehem in the County of Albany and State of New York a volunteer and enlisted in Capt. Van Wie’s Company in Col. Vandenberg’s regiment the last of September 1776 for the time of three month as a Drummer and was immediately marched to Saratoga in the State of New York where the said company and regiment were engaged in building barracks and he this declarent served as a drummer in said Company until hi time of three months expired.  He was discharged about the First of January 1777 and then returned home.

        He again entered the said service at Bethlehem aforesaid and joined Capt. William Winne’s Company in col. Vandenberg’s regiment of militia as a substitute for one Jacob Kimme who had been drafted.  He joined the said Company about the first of July 1777 and was immediately order by the Captain to serve as a drummer for the said Company and was immediately marched to Fort Edward in the State of New York where he served as a drummer and as a substitute for the said Jacob Kimme for the term of two months, and was discharged about the first of September 1777 and then returned home.

        He again entered the said service at Bethlehem aforesaid a volunteer and enlisted in Capt. Van Wie’s Company in Col. Quackenbush’s regiment of militia on the first of September 1778 for the term of three months as a drummer and was marched to Schoharie and stationed at the Upper Fort where he served as a drummer in the said company until his term of three months expired.  He was discharged on the first of December 1778 and then retuned home.

        He again entered the said service at Bethlehem aforesaid a volunteer and joined Capt. Leonard’s company in the month of August, as near as he can recollect in the year 1779 for the term of one month – Isaac Van Arnum was a Lieutenant in said Company but he can not recollect the Colonels name who commanded the regiment.  He served as a drummer in the said Company and was marched to Saratoga where he staid a short time and from there was marched to Schenectady where he staid until his term of one month expired, and was discharged in the month of September 1779 as near as he can recollect.  He was in the actual Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War in an embodied Corps and served as a drummer Nine Month and for such service he claims a pension.

        He was born in Holland in the month of February 1753 and came to this Country when he was 12 years of age and arrived at New York and from there he removed to Albany and from there to the Town of Bethlehem in the County of Albany where he resided when he entered the said service at the several periods above mentioned.  He continued to reside in Bethlehem until he removed to his present place of residence in the said Town of Berne, where he has lived for the last 36 years.

        He has seen a record of his age in his father Bible which is now lost.

        He does not recollect the name of any of the regular officers he served with except Genl. Schuyler.  He knew Doctor Stringer also.  He does not particularly recollect what Continental or Militia Regiment he served with. 

        He never received a written discharge, nor was he in any battles.

        *This declaration continues on and states the names of witnesses in his neighborhood, etc. etc.
